World Music. September 21th

Traducción: Ana Elizabeth Olguín Vargas

This morning, we started our program with the jazz, swing and rockabilly band; Leftover Cuties. Then we continued with Roe por la escalera by the Spain band; Chambao. Their music genre is called, Flamenco Chill, which consists on a mix of flamenco and electronic music. Chambao is also a Malaga word used to refer to a simply space, with a palm leaves roof, reeds and wooden sticks rising as a refuge from the sun and wind used by fish cooks to cook sardines.

Next we listened to the composer, singer and accordion king from Monterrey; Celso Piña with his song: El Tren. From Monterrey to Paris, we are listening to the song; Buddha Bar III by the French band; Gotan Project, an electronic tango and jazz band formed by the French DJ, Philippe Cohen Solal, the Swiss musician Christoph H. Müller and the Argentine guitar player Eduardo Makaroff. The band's name comes from a common play on words from the rioplatense Spanish called vesre, which consists in reverse the order of the syllables in a word. Thus the word "tango" becomes "gotan".

The 10th song presented was by Amparanoia, the pseudonym of the Spanish singer and guitarist; Amparo Sánchez, who combined his name with the word paranoia. His music is defined by the musical critics as: Cuban acoustic and reggae. Amparanoia has collaborated with the French singer Manu Chao. The 11th song was performed by Soleil d'Egypte executed by the Belgian singer; Natasha Atlas, born in '64. She presented a mixture of Middle Eastern music, North Africa traditional music and European electronic beats. Atlas is the daughter of an Egyptian Sephardic Jew and an English mother. During her first solo album: Diáspora 1995, she worked with the Tunisian singer; Walid Rouissi and the Egyptian composer; Essam Rashad.

We always crave the rhythm of ska at the program’s halftime to relax a bit. Garden of Love was created by The Skatalites’s throats and hands, a Jamaican band credited for being the originators of the ska rhythm. Wanting to maintain the same rhythm, we completed the moment with Don’t Like by Anouk, a French singer who collaborated on several Manu Chao, Mano Negra and her own band’s albums. She also collaborated on Patchanka, Puta's Fever, King of Bongo and Casa Babylon’s albums. Her best known collaborating was for the song; Pas assez de toi and Manú, participating prominently on the chorus of Je ne t'aime plus from the album Clandestino in 1998.

We finished the rhythm of congas and saxophones but we complemented the ambient with the song Love Will Tear Us Apart by the English post-punk band; Joy Division. The lyrics were written by the band's singer Ian Curtis, who committed suicide at 23 years of age on May 1980.

We left the British atmosphere for a jarocho sound by Andres Vega Delfin from Veracruz, interpreting the song El Trompito, which Godo, the program host, adores. Next we enjoyed our city’s music with Juan Cirerol from Mexicali, called by some; The crystal prophet. His music is inspired by different styles that cover from Chalino Sanchez to Johnny Cash style. Moving from northern music to ranch punk, Cirerol joined us with a Joan Sebastian cover; Sentimental.

Then we listened to Floricanto by the American and Mexican singer; Lhasa de Sela, who used to sing in three languages: Spanish, French and English, was characterized by combining traditional Mexican music with klezmer and rock. Keeping the Mexican tenor, we presented Te solté la rienda, performed by a mariachi and Lola Beltran from Sinaloa, also known as Lola la Grande. Since we were enjoying the mariachi, we listened to Pedro Infante interpreting the sad song; Que suerte la mía. Then, we presented Tarascan music played with harp.

From Michoacan, we were delighted by Women is the nigger on the world by John Lennon. And almost at the end of the program, we listened to Bándola llanera, a Venezuelan meringue by Gerson Garcia. Finally, to end out today's edition, we said goodbye with some Afro-Cuban jazz rhythm by Tinguiti ta durmiendo by The Ferry.
